Choosing high-quality BBs has just as much influence on the accuracy and performance of an airsoft gun as a precision barrel or a correctly adjusted hop-up. BLS PRECISION BIO BBs are a proven choice on the market for high-quality 6mm ammunition. This Taiwanese company offers high-quality and globally best-selling BBs for all types of airsoft guns, whether they are airsoft pistols, rifles, SMGs, machine guns or sniper rifles. BLS PRECISION BIO BBs undergo manual measurement and very strict quality control. In addition to dimensional quality, the manufacturer also focuses on surface quality, carefully controlling the polishing process and smoothness of the BBs to achieve maximum range and a consistent flight path. BLS BBs offer an excellent price-to-quality ratio. The measured BB diameter is 5.95 mm (± 0.01 mm), so they can be safely used even in tight-bore sniper rifle barrels with an inner diameter of 6.01 mm or in high-RoF builds firing 25+ BBs/s. The black colour makes it harder to reveal the shooter's position because the BBs are almost invisible in flight (the hop-up can be adjusted using white BBs or by shooting against a white background). The PRECISION BIO version is made from a special PLA-based polymer (Polylactic Acid), which decomposes many times faster in nature; some fields and arenas only allow the use of BIO BBs.
The correct airsoft BB weight depends primarily on the gun's performance, the quality and adjustment of the hop-up system and the intended use. Lighter BBs are suitable for lower-powered guns and shorter distances, while heavier BBs generally maintain better stability when shooting over longer distances. The table provides an approximate recommendation for BB weight and hop-up bucking hardness while also showing the muzzle energy in Joules of a specific BB weight at muzzle velocities of 90, 110 and 130 m/s.
| BB weight | Approximate gun performance m/s with 0.20g BB | Recommended hardness of hop-up bucking | Energy at 90 m/s | Energy at 110 m/s | Energy at 130 m/s |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.20 g | up to 105 m/s | 50–60 Sh | 0.81 J | 1.21 J | 1.69 J |
| 0.23 g | 100–115 m/s | 50–60 Sh | 0.93 J | 1.39 J | 1.94 J |
| 0.25 g | 105–125 m/s | 60 Sh | 1.01 J | 1.51 J | 2.11 J |
| 0.28 g | 115–135 m/s | 60–70 Sh | 1.13 J | 1.69 J | 2.37 J |
| 0.30 g | 120–140 m/s | 60–70 Sh | 1.22 J | 1.82 J | 2.54 J |
| 0.32 g | 125–145 m/s | 70–75 Sh | 1.30 J | 1.94 J | 2.70 J |
| 0.36 g | 135–150 m/s | 70–75 Sh | 1.46 J | 2.18 J | 3.04 J |
| 0.40 g | 140–155 m/s | 70–80 Sh | 1.62 J | 2.42 J | 3.38 J |
| 0.43 g | 145–160 m/s | 75–80 Sh | 1.74 J | 2.60 J | 3.63 J |
| 0.45 g | 150–165 m/s | 75–80 Sh | 1.82 J | 2.72 J | 3.80 J |
| 0.48 g | 155 m/s and above | 80–85 Sh | 1.94 J | 2.90 J | 4.06 J |
The listed BB weight and hop-up bucking hardness ranges are approximate. The ideal combination also depends on barrel length, hop-up unit design, pressure system, the specific bucking, cylinder volume, temperature and the overall tuning of the gun.
How to read the table: The “Approximate gun performance” column uses the common comparison of muzzle velocity measured with a 0.20g BB. In contrast, the values at 90, 110 and 130 m/s show the actual energy of a specific BB weight at that velocity. For example, a 0.32g BB travelling at 110 m/s has approximately 1.94 J.
A heavier BB does not automatically mean better performance. It primarily depends on the gun's muzzle velocity, the type of hop-up pressure system and the bucking (hardness and contact patch design). If your gun has sufficient power and the hop-up unit can apply enough spin to heavier BBs, you will achieve a more stable trajectory, better resistance to wind and greater accuracy at longer distances. For lower-powered guns or basic hop-up buckings, choose lighter ammunition so the BB does not lose too much range, as standard plastic hop-up arms may not maintain the required hop-up setting with heavier ammunition.
Choosing the ideal BB weight is a balancing act in which you are looking for the perfect ratio between a flat trajectory and range. A general rule is to choose the heaviest ammunition that your hop-up unit can still spin effectively without the BB losing too much velocity. If the BB rises uncontrollably after leaving the barrel (“floats”) and reacts to every gust of wind, it is too light. If, on the other hand, it drops towards the ground even with the hop-up fully adjusted, the gun does not have sufficient performance for that weight. A correctly selected BB maintains a straight flight path and consistent grouping.
Definitely. Conditions on the field play an important role. Heavier BBs are better suited to outdoor games because they maintain their flight path more effectively, are less affected by wind and can pass through light foliage more consistently. In CQB arenas and when shooting at distances of 15–25 metres, on the other hand, you will not fully utilise the potential of the hop-up system, so lighter BBs can be a better choice. Their higher velocity gives them a shorter flight time to the target and, at the same velocity, their lower impact energy can also reduce unnecessarily painful hits on opponents at close range.
The main advantage of BIO BBs is their reduced environmental impact. They are made from biodegradable materials (most commonly PLA-based plastic derived from corn starch), so they gradually decompose in nature through the effects of moisture, UV radiation and microorganisms rather than leaving behind conventional plastic waste. Today's premium BIO BBs, such as BLS BIO, also achieve the same dimensional precision, flawless surface and flight characteristics as standard plastic BBs. You therefore do not have to worry about jams in precision inner barrels or poorer grouping. The use of BIO ammunition is also mandatory at most outdoor airsoft fields and events.
