Yes, they fit securely in properly sized pouches. In slightly oversized pockets they may move a little, but they still improve the carrier's shape significantly compared to an empty pouch.
Which is better—plastic or foam inserts?
Foam is softer and more comfortable, while plastic holds its shape much better. If realism and carrier stability are your priorities, plastic is the better option. For side plates, however, the comfort difference is less noticeable than with front and rear plates.
